How to Determine the Correct Sink Plug Size?

Choosing the right sink plug size can sometimes feel like solving a puzzle. Whether you're replacing an old plug or selecting one for a new sink, several factors come into play to ensure a perfect fit. From understanding the measurements to considering the type of sink and drain, finding the correct size involves attention to detail. By exploring these aspects, you can confidently select a sink plug that not only fits snugly but also functions seamlessly with your sink setup.

Types of Sink Plugs: There are two common types of sink plugs for round center hole drains: Ball Pin and Screw Pin.

  • Ball Pin: This model allows you to push and pull the plug to open and close the drain.

  • Screw Pin: Featuring a twist knob on the kitchen counter, you turn this to lift or lower the plug. Both types are designed for round center-hole kitchen sink drains but operate differently.

There are 3 methods of measuring your sink plug size.

1. Measure your old plug
2. Use our sink plug template
3. Measure your sink drain.

Method 1: Measure old sink plug

  1. Take your old sink plug.
  2. Use a caliper to measure the diameter by gently closing it around the widest part of the plug.
  3. Ensure the measurement is taken through the center of the plug.
If you don't have a caliper, use a ruler.

Be sure to measure that you measure exactly through the centre. Not measuring through the center results in a too small diameter. A hack to find the center is to start measuring off center and slightly move the ruler to the center. You’ll see that the size start increasing. Once you pass the center the size starts decreasing again. If this happens move back to the centre until you reach the max. size. This is the actual diameter.

Method 2: Use this template downloadable to determine the size of your sink plug.

  1. Print this template on A4 size paper (download on bottom of page).
  2. Place your old sink plug with the convex side up on the paper.
  3. Position the sink plug in the square.
  4. Ensure the sink plug touches the blue square on the left and bottom sides of the blue square. Make sure the sink plug aligns with the bumps at the level of the two bumps on the paper.
  5. The sink plug will touch one of the 3 squares on the right side. Based on the color of the line that is touched, determine the correct size of the sink plug.
  6. Still unsure about which size sink plug you need? Feel free to contact us at support@minismus.eu.

This document is 210 mm x 297 mm (DIN A4 format). Be sure to print ‘Actual Scale’ and NOT ‘fit to page’ or ‘scale’. No Margins. Not sure if the template has been printed to the correct scale? Then measure the squares with a ruler.

 Method 3: Measure sink Drain

I do not have the original sink plug!?
No worries, follow our instructions below

  1.  Measure Diameter of drain.

Important It is important to measure right in the middle. If you don't do this, you risk measuring a diameter that's too small. Place the measuring tape precisely over the center hole of the drain to measure accurately.

Tip: Use a calliper for most accurate measurement

  2. Subtract 2mm from measurement

This is needed to ensure there is a small amount of space between the sink plug and the drain so it does not jam.
