Large Plant Watering Globes: How to Choose the Right Size for Big Plants
The most common complaint about plant watering globes is that they run dry too quickly. In nearly every case, the cause is the same: a globe that is too small for the plant and pot it is serving. A waterdruppelaar voor grote planten needs to be sized to match the water demand — not just the physical size of the globe.
Why size matters more than you think
A large plant in a large pot has a proportionally larger root zone and a greater leaf surface area through which water evaporates. It needs significantly more water per day than a small plant. A 270ml globe lasts 7 to 10 days in a 20cm pot; in a 40cm pot with a large monstera, the same globe may be empty in 2 days — not because the globe is defective, but because the plant's demand far exceeds its capacity.
The right globe for large indoor plants
For pots of 25cm and larger, the minimum useful globe size is 700ml. The Minismus Watering Globes 700ml 6-Pack provides roughly 14 to 21 days of hydration in a medium-to-large pot under typical indoor conditions. This covers:
- Monstera deliciosa in a 30 to 40cm pot
- Fiddle leaf fig
- Large snake plant (Sansevieria)
- Bird of paradise
- Large dracaena or yucca
When to use terracotta spikes for large plants
For very large plants or plants with high water demands, a terracotta spike is often more effective than a plastic globe. The porous spike walls release water across a larger surface area, delivering more moisture more consistently than the small neck opening of a plastic globe.
The Minismus Terracotta Spike XL at 950ml is designed for exactly this scenario — large tropical plants indoors and large potted plants outdoors. For a collection of large plants, the Terracotta Spike XL Set of 4 covers four large pots in one purchase.
Multiple globes in one large pot
For very large pots — 50cm and above — a single globe of any size may not be sufficient. In this case, two or three 700ml globes placed around the perimeter of the pot, or two terracotta XL spikes on opposite sides, distributes the water more evenly through the root zone. Plants in very large decorative pots particularly benefit from this approach, as their root mass extends across the full pot diameter.
The rule of thumb
Pot diameter up to 20cm: one 270ml globe. Pot diameter 20 to 35cm: one 700ml globe or one terracotta 450ml spike. Pot diameter 35cm and above: one 700ml globe plus one additional, or a terracotta XL spike. Pot diameter 50cm and above: two to three globes or two terracotta XL spikes.
If in doubt, check the water level 24 hours after installation. A globe that has already dropped to half in 24 hours will be empty within two to three days — size up. View the full Minismus plant watering range to compare all sizes and materials.
