Which Shower Door Seal Do I Need? Here's How to Find the Right One in 3 Simple Steps

Which Shower Door Seal Do I Need? Here's How to Find the Right One in 3 Simple Steps

Is your shower door leaking or are the rubber strips starting to look worn and grimy? Then it's probably time for a replacement. But with so many types of shower seals available, how do you know which one fits your door? The good news is that you don’t need to know the brand or model of your shower cabin. With a few simple measurements, you can find the right fit in no time.

Why Shower Seals Matter

Shower door seals may be small, but they play a big role in keeping your bathroom clean and dry.

  • They help keep water inside the shower area

  • They prevent mold and limescale from building up

  • They give your shower a neat and well-kept look

Replacing an old or damaged seal is an easy fix that makes a big difference.

Step 1: Measure the Glass Thickness

Start by measuring how thick your shower glass is. Use a slide gauge or digital caliper and measure a bit away from the edge of the glass for an accurate result.

Most shower doors are 6 mm or 8 mm thick, though 5 mm or 10 mm is also possible.

Tip: Measure the glass itself, not the old seal. Worn seals can be deformed and give you the wrong reading.

Step 2: Check the Free Space

Now look at the open space around the door, often called the "gap" or "speling." This is the space:

  • Between the bottom of the door and the floor or shower tray

  • Between the door and the wall

  • Between two shower doors (if you have a corner or double-door setup)

Use a measuring tape or ruler. The size of this gap helps determine which seal fits best. If the seal is too tight, it can wear out quickly. If it’s too small, water might leak through.

Step 3: Pick the Right Model

Choose a seal that matches both the shape of your glass and the position where you’ll install it.

There are:

  • Bottom seals for underneath the door

  • Side seals for the vertical edges

  • Magnetic seals for double doors that close against each other

Check if your glass is straight, curved, or angled. Each product on our website has a technical drawing that shows exactly how it fits. Compare your measurements to find the best match.

How to Replace a Shower Seal

Swapping out your old strip takes just a few minutes:

  1. Gently remove the current seal from the glass

  2. Clean the edge thoroughly to remove any soap or limescale

  3. Slide the new seal into place and press gently until it fits snug

If the strip feels too stiff or tight, use a hairdryer on low heat to warm it up slightly. This makes the material more flexible and easier to install

A Simple Fix for a Fresh Start

Finding the right seal doesn’t need to be complicated. With a few quick measurements, you can be sure of a proper fit and a leak-free shower.
